Guangzhou, China – March 11, 2026 – Peter Helis, Chief Advisor for Invest Guangzhou / Huangpu and a leading expert on Greater Bay Area (GBA) policy and investment, delivered a compelling lecture today at Knowledge City Investment Group. The session, the first in the Year of the Horse, focused on navigating global economic headwinds, China's evolving position in 2026, and actionable lessons from the latest German Chamber of Commerce in China (AHK) Business Confidence Survey 2025/26.

In the lecture, Helis explored pressing global challenges such as geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and selective foreign direct investment (FDI) trends. He highlighted China's robust stance in 2026 as a world leader in innovation-driven sectors like AI, electric vehicles (EVs), and green technology, underpinned by the 15th Five-Year Plan and "new quality productive forces." Despite modest FDI growth of 2.1% in 2025, Helis emphasized China's maturity as a market where foreign investors seek precision and reciprocity over volume.

Drawing from the AHK survey of 627 German firms, Helis discussed key findings: a slight uptick in sentiment with 17% expecting economic improvement in 2025, yet persistent hurdles like price pressure (60%) and "Buy China" policies (32%). Opportunities shone through in partnerships, with 56% of respondents eyeing deeper joint ventures (JVs) and 68% engaging with Chinese firms going abroad, under the theme "Partnerships Reloaded."
For Guangzhou Huangpu, Helis outlined practical lessons: nurturing optimism with honest risk assessments and long-term incentives; acting as "super connectors" to facilitate JVs, mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and collaborations beyond pure FDI; and building ecosystems by auditing local gaps and fostering two-way knowledge flows.
"By leveraging insights from surveys like AHK's, Huangpu can position itself as a hub for mutual success, bridging foreign expertise with Chinese ambition in high-value sectors," said Helis. "This lecture equips our teams to turn challenges into opportunities, driving sustainable investment in the GBA."
