Guangzhou / Hong Kong — May 2026

After seven years serving as Chief Advisor to Guangzhou’s Huangpu District and the Guangzhou Development District, Peter Helis announced today that he will not renew his contract when it concludes in June. The move marks the end of a rare tenure — the only foreigner to serve at director level inside the district — and the beginning of an independent advisory practice focused on the Greater Bay Area.

“The GBA has moved through several cycles during my time inside the system. What hasn’t changed is its trajectory. It remains one of the most important innovation regions in the world,” Helis said.

The decision comes at a moment when global interest in China is rising again and the GBA is re‑entering international conversations as a technology and manufacturing powerhouse. Helis will continue to work with organisations seeking grounded insight, strategic clarity, and practical engagement with the region.

“This is not an exit. It’s a shift in format. The work continues — with more flexibility and a wider lens.”

Further updates and commentary will be published on helis.org.
