Which sustainability concepts are most suitable for future urban development? Guided by this question, European and Chinese representatives met for the EU-China Forum on Sustainable Urban Development that was held in Foshan on 18th December 2015. The event was organized by the China Center for Urban Development of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and
supported by the city government of Foshan. Ideas and successfully applied concepts for sustainable urban development in China and Europe were discussed in various keynote speeches and panel discussions. About 300 government officials and business representatives participated in the forum, among them Mr. Yuelun Liu, Secretary of the CPC Foshan Municipal Committee, Mr. Yi Lu, Mayor of Foshan and Mr. Peter Helis, Managing Director of Helis & Associates. The two-day EU-China Forum on Sustainable Urban Development furthermore aimed at creating new cooperation projects between Chinese and European cities and strengthening existing ones. An outstanding example of successful cooperation between cities of the European Union and China is the host city Foshan itself. The metropolis located in the Pearl River Delta has tight relationships to five sister cities in Europe, including the German city Ingolstadt. In addition, Foshan promotes sustainable construction and city transportation projects. Witnessed by Mr. Yuelun Liu and Mr. Yi Lu, Helis & Associates signed a Cooperation Agreement with Foshan New City, a construction project designed by highest sustainability standards that involves several Chinese and German companies. The signing ceremony represents a further step of intensification of the business relations.
